Advocates To Rally In Support Of Delaware River Fracking Ban

WASHINGTON CROSSING, PA —Environmental groups are organizing an event on Sept. 2 outside the Delaware River Basin Commission's annual meeting in Washington Crossing to show their support for a continued ban on fracking in the Delaware River watershed.

The Delaware River Frack Ban Coalition has scheduled a press conference from 11:30 a.m. to noon outside the Washington Crossing State Park Visitor Center, 1112 River Road, Washington Crossing 18977. To RSVP, click here.

According to the coalition, the press conference is intended to show community support for the commission's ban and to defend it from renewed challenges.

"Fracking interests tried unsuccessfully last month to pass federal legislation that would have overturned the ban on fracking in the watershed," the coalition said. "We prevailed, and the ban is still in place, but efforts to undo that protection are still underway."

The Delaware River Frack Ban Coalition includes Berks Gas Truth, Catskill Mountainkeeper, Damascus Citizens for Sustainability, Delaware Riverkeeper Network, Environment New Jersey, Food and Water Watch, and Green Amendments for the Generations.

Since 2010, the Delaware River Basin has been protected from fracking, which the coalition said has safeguarded drinking water for communities in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Delaware, while protecting the environment from damage tied to fracking.
