NEWTOWN, PA — The Washington Crossing Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), is inviting students in grades 5 through 8 to participate in its 2026-27 American History Essay Contest.
This year's essay topic, "Announcement of the Declaration of Independence First Public Reading," asks students to imagine what it would have been like to hear the Declaration of Independence read aloud in their community in 1776.
On July 8, 1776, the Declaration was publicly read in Philadelphia. From there, the news spread throughout the colonies through newspapers, public readings, and posted notices. Students are asked to consider: How would you react to hearing the Declaration read in your community? With whom would you share the news? What action would you take? How would this news impact your life?
"The Daughters of the American Revolution continue to provide avenues to bring our history to life. This essay contest draws students into the very heart of what makes us a nation," said Carolyn Lamberth of the Washington Crossing Chapter, NSDAR.
The contest is open to students in grades 5, 6, 7, and 8 attending public, private, or parochial schools, as well as students who are homeschooled. Students whose school or class is not participating may submit an entry directly to a DAR chapter in their state.
Essays must be 300–1,000 words, depending on grade level. Students and teachers should consult the official contest forms for specific grade-level requirements and submission guidelines.
The American History Essay Contest encourages young people to explore the events and individuals that shaped our nation while developing their research, writing, and critical-thinking skills. The Washington Crossing Chapter is pleased to provide local students with an opportunity to connect with this important moment in American history.
