19 Norristown Runners Finish Philadelphia Marathon

On Sunday, over 9,000 people took to the streets of Philadelphia to race 26.2 miles. How did Norristown stack up?

Norristown had a strong showing at the Philadelphia Marathon on Sunday, as 21 local residents completed the 26.2 mile course.

Over 9,000 finishers sweat and bled from the Art Museum on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway, through Old City, along the Delaware River, through Center City, University City, past the Zoo, up and down Martin Luther King Drive and West River Drive, through Manayunk and back through it again to finish at the Art Museum.

Teklu Deneke, 32, of Flagstaff, Arizona won the overall race in 2:17:43. He was trailed closely by Abraham Kiprop Rutto, a Roxborough resident, in second place.

Gisela Olade Granados, 31, of Tennessee, meanwhile, won the women’s competition, in 2:40;04. She was also followed by a Philadelphia resident, 24-year-old Margaret Vido, in second place.

“This weekend proved what an amazing opportunity the race was for the runners to demonstrate their human spirit and we were honored to be there, cheering them on and creating a community spirit mile after mile,” said Kirk Christensen, Running Footwear leader for Gore, an event sponsor.

From Norristown, 19-year-old Hans Stedman ran 3:07:08 to lead the way for the borough.
