Facing A Shortage, PA Liquor Stores Have Placed A 2 Bottle Limit On These Items

PENNSYLVANIA — Facing a supply shortage which they say is out of their hands, Pennsylvania state liquor stores have instituted a two-bottle limit on certain items, they announced this week.

The rationing, which only applies to 43 different specific products, will be in place indefinitely. The rationed items vary from certain brands of bourbon, cognac, and tequila to types of champagne. It applies to liquor store customers, as well as bars and restaurants.

The Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board cited issues with the supply chain, as well as restricted availability of certain types of liquor. It's not clear what's causing the issues.

"While the current supply challenges are not unique to Pennsylvania and are impacting markets across the U.S., the PLCB has experienced product shortfalls before, and we regularly impose bottle limits on products for which we know demand will exceed supply in order to distribute the product as fairly as possible," PCLB Press Secretary Shawn Kelly said in a statement to Patch.

The goal is to evenly distribute these limited products in an effort to prevent any store from going completely out of stock of any one item, officials said.

The restrictions come as the restaurant and bar industry continues to recover from the pandemic. The Pennsylvania Licensed Beverage and Tavern Association, which works with small business taverns and restaurants around the state, said it's a sign of a larger problem that needs to be addressed.

"Supply and labor issues have hampered many small businesses across the state," executive director Chuck Moran said in an email to Patch. "For taverns and licensed restaurants, it's particularly problematic as the industry works to recover. We hope that when the state legislature returns to Harrisburg, they'll remember that these businesses still need help. And, we hope they take action to help these businesses with their recovery efforts."
