2 Children Saved From Turbulent Schuylkill After Daring Water Rescue In Bridgeport

BRIDGEPORT, PA — Two children were rescued from the Schuylkill River in Bridgeport Wednesday amid fast moving waters that were turbulent from recent storms.

The incident occurred just before 1 p.m. near Frosty Falls, by 3 DeKalb Street.

A Bridgeport police sergeant noticed the school-aged children in neck deep water near the DeKalb Street Bridge.

He called Montgomery County Police and Fire Radio, and then called to the children from shore to guide them to a small island to await rescue.

Swift water rescue squads and technicians arrived, with support from the Bridgeport Fire Department, Upper Merion Fire Department, and Norristown Fire Departments.

They were eventually able to reach the children and rescue them near the SEPTA Norristown High Speed Line trestle.

"Many thanks to the work of our local firefighters for their quick response and lifesaving actions," Chief Todd Bereda said in a statement.

One of the children suffered minor cuts, but they were reunited safely with their families on shore.

Police reminded residents to be wary of the Schuylkill and its potentially treacherous currents due to the heavy rain in recent days.
