2012 Norristown HS Graduate Graduates From Navy Nuclear School

The school is considered to be among the most demanding academic programs in the U.S. military.

NORRISTOWN, PA — A Norristown Area High School graduate has compelted a rigorous course of training within the U.S. Navy, the district announced.

Amanda Assenmacher, a 2012 Norristown alumna, recently graduated with distiction from the US Navy’s Officer Nuclear Power School (NPS), finishing 15th in her class.

The school is considered to be among the most demanding academic programs in the U.S. military.

Graduates of the six-month program go on to operate and maintain nuclear reactors on the Navy's submarines and aircraft carriers.

In order to graduate, Assenmacher completed courses ranging from nuclear and health physics to thermodynamics and electrical power theory, according to an announcement from the Norristown Area School District.

Assenmacher, a lieutenant junior grade, will now head to New York for six months of hands-on training before being deployed on an aircraft carrier assignment.
