230 Montco Parents Owing Child Support Have 1 Day Of Amnesty Left

Montgomery County parents who owe child support have until Friday to turn themselves in and work out a payment plan, the sheriff said.

NORRISTOWN, PA — Montgomery County parents who owe child support have until Friday to turn themselves in and work out a payment plan, the sheriff said.

The Sheriff's Office offered a week long "amnesty" for any parents who had fallen behind on payments. Parents can turn themselves in - without fear of arrest - and work on a plan to balance their account.

The offer expires at 4 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 31.

“Child support is a critical source of income for many families," Domestic Relations Office Director Gary Kline said in a statement. "Our ultimate goal is to try and create financial stability by reducing barriers to paying child support."

There are more than 230 parents in Montgomery County who are delinquent on their payments, the sheriff's office said.

A similar program was implemented in 2013 and helped bring back more than 6.5 percent of money owed for child support, according to county statistics.

Sheriff Sean P. Kilkenny said that parents will face a "range of consequences" if they do not turn themselves in.

“We will aggressively pursue these parents after the amnesty period, after which they could be subject to wage and tax refund garnishment, suspended licenses and passports, arrest, and jail time,” Sheriff Sean P. Kilkenny said in a statement. “I hope that even the smallest amount of support can help kids get off to a good start as they head back to school.”
