It seemed that not until the National League Championship Series' final pitch from Ranger Suarez had fallen into the glove of Nick Castellanos was the world ready to admit that the Phillies were going to the World Series.
At season's start, the Phillies were plus 2000 odds to reach the World Series. Most analysts around baseball predicted they would finish third or fourth in the National League East, correctly forecasting a strong Atlanta Braves squad and crossing their fingers that the New York Mets would find some way to snap their collapse-prone ways. Some even had the Miami Marlins finishing ahead of the Phillies.

By midseason, with the Phillies only just starting to climb out of the hole they'd dug themselves in the season's early weeks, their odds were even dimmer: plus 4000. Most now saw them as a long shot to even make the playoffs.
They were back down to plus 2000 to start the playoffs, and then were underdogs against all four of their opponents. They beat the odds the first three times: knocking off the 91-win Cardinals, the 101-win Braves, and an 89-win Padres club that had just eliminated two giants in the Mets and the World Series-favorite Dodgers.
Rewriting franchise home run record books
Bryce Harper, Kyle Schwarber, and Rhys Hoskins all now find their names entrenched atop the Phillies franchise postseason record books.
Three of the big sluggers of the 2022 team are now in a four-way tie for the second most home runs in a single postseason.
- Jayson Werth (2008) - 7
- Bryce Harper (2022) - 6
- Kyle Schwarber (2022) - 6
- Rhys Hoskins (2022) - 6
- Lenny Dykstra (1993) - 6
Most home runs in a single World Series game
The Phillies 7-0 drubbing of the Astros in Game 3 was not just one of the loudest nights anyone can ever remember in south Philadelphia. It was also a game that tied for the most home runs in a single World Series game ever.
The Phillies belted five dingers out of the park, including mammoth hits from Kyle Schwarber, Brandon Marsh, Alec Bohm, Bryce Harper, and Rhys Hoskins. The five home runs tied the 1928 New York Yankees, the 1989 Oakland Athletics, and the 2017 Asterisks for the most ever.
