PHILADLEPHIA, PA — As the weeks tick by into the 2021-22 season and Sixers All-Star Ben Simmons remains off the court, tensions continue to mount.

Now, Rich Paul, Simmons' agent, is speaking out. In an interview this week with The Athletic's Shams Charania, he had some harsh words for the organization which he says is not being considerate of their star's mental health.

“In this case, we have to get Ben help and not put finances above mental health,” Paul told the outlet. “As an agent, I understand contractual obligations and I hold myself accountable in this business. But if someone is telling you something, we can no longer turn a blind eye in today’s world."

Simmons and Paul say they've been clear Simmons was not mentally ready to play since the summer. The report Friday suggests the Sixers were not aware of any mental blocks until Oct. 22.

Either way, the Sixers maintain that Simmons is not cooperating with team officials and the organization's mental health team on his recovery. This spurred their recent decision to resume fining Simmons for not playing in games. Paul said that a new doctor would not be able to make an accurate determination on Simmons' status after just one session.

“This is no longer about a trade," Paul added. "This is about finding a place where we can help Ben get back to his mental strength and get back on the floor. I want him on the floor playing the game that he loves."

The Sixers are continuing to shop Simmons, who has drawn trade interest lately from the Boston Celtics, among other suitors.
