NORRISTOWN, PA — A bridge in Montgomery County has been officially renamed to honor a powerful and beloved figure from the Norristown area who came to define public service and community leadership.
The bridge carrying Whitehall Road over Kepner Creek in East Norriton was named the E. Pearl Smith Memorial Bridge during a special ceremony last week.
"Pearl exemplified service, service to her community, her church and, most importantly, her family,” State Rep. Matt Bradford said in a statement. “Her legacy will live on thanks to her many contributions, and this bridge dedication is one way that we can memorialize and remember our friend and neighbor.”
Smith was a longtime school board president in the Norristown Area School District and a community leader through the Mt. Zion AME Church in Norristown.
A lifelong resident of the area, Smith died at 84 in March 2024. She won numerous awards for her service to the school district, led multiple boards, co-chaired several Women’s Day celebrations, volunteered with the American Cancer Society, and also worked for the Philadelphia Purchasing Association and Central Montgomery County Technical High School.
Smith, her husband Ernest, and their four sons spent years in Norristown. Upon retirement, they moved to West Norriton. Smith was fiercely proud of her family and passed her legacy to numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
"Her life was about bridging connections in our community," State Rep. Greg Scott added, noting a bridge was a fitting honor. " She made the road a little easier for folks who look like me and who came from our neighborhood. It’s more than a bridge, it’s about her legacy."
