'Bright, Ambitious, Loving': Norristown Family Mourns Boy Shot, Killed On Streets

The 15-year-old victim of last week's tragedy loved football, fishing, cooking, and his family. "He brought joy to everyone who knew him."

NORRISTOWN, PA — The Norristown teenager shot and killed by another teen last week, identified by family as 15-year-old Javon Oyola, has been described as a smart and devoted young man.

"Javon was a bright, ambitious, and loving young man with a future ahead of him," Tatianna Brantley, a friend of the Oyola family, wrote in a GoFundMe. "More than anything, Javon loved his family. He was a cherished son, brother, friend, and teammate whose life touched so many people in his community."

Javon's future was cut short on the night of June 3. A 16-year-old, Alex Herrera, has been arrested and charged with first degree murder.

Police said that two groups of teens had tried to meet in three different locations to fight before the shooting occurred.

"Just weeks ago, Angie was looking forward to watching her son grow, supporting him through another school year, and celebrating the milestones that every parent dreams of witnessing," Brantley added.

Javon had four sisters whom he loved. He also loved football, fishing, and cooking, and "brought joy to everyone who knew him."

The GoFundMe has raised $6,652 from 164 donations as of Monday morning. Friends hope it will help cover funeral and memorial costs and related financial burdens associated with loss.

Meanwhile, officials have called for comprehensive reform and a renewed youth violence prevention strategy after the latest tragedy. State Rep. Greg Scott urged Norristown Municipal Council and the Norristown Police Department to convene a community meeting, inviting government officials, clergy, teachers, residents, and community groups.

“The young people of Norristown deserve leaders who are urgently focused on developing and implementing real solutions," Scott said Thursday. "Far too many young lives have been lost, and we cannot allow this level of violence to become accepted as normal."
