PHILADELPHIA, PA — The Eagles have reportedly locked up franchise quarterback Carson Wentz for the forseeable future, signing him to a four-year contract extension Thursday that locks him up through the 2024 season.

It's a definitive statement of trust by the Eagles in Wentz. The signing comes in the wake of the departure of Super Bowl MVP and living legend Nick Foles, public questions about Wentz's leadership skills, his future, and his general health. In locking him down for the foreseeable future, the Eagles are saying none of that matters: they believe in Wentz.

The four year extension is worth $128 million with more than $100 million of it guarenteed, according to NFL Insider Ian Rapoport.

When healthy, Wentz has flashed talent that more than justifies this type of deal. Health does remain a concern for the 26-year-old, as his seasons have been cut notably short by knee and back ailments. Two years in a row, Wentz's injuries opened the door for Foles to lead the team on deep playoff runs.

Wentz was not in quite the form in 2018 that he was the year before, when he performed at an MVP level for 10 weeks, but he's confident he can get back there.

"To be a part of this great city for this many more years, it means the world to me," Wentz said Thursday evening.

The Eagles open up the 2019 season at home on Sept. 8 against the Washington Redskins.
