Code Red Declared In Montco As Severe Heat Hits Region

In Montgomery County, residents are urged to check on the most vulnerable individuals, particularly those with severe medical conditions.

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, PA — The latest spate of hot weather has led officials in Montgomery County to issue a Code Red warning.

The declaration will be in place from noon on Wednesday, Aug. 11 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 13.

Forecasters are predicting "dangerously hot conditions," with heat index values around 105 on Wednesday and 110 on Thursday.

"Such conditions can be deadly, and residents should take precautions to prevent heat-related stress and exhaustion," the county said in announcing the Code Red.

In Montgomery County, residents are urged to check on the most vulnerable residents, particularly those with severe medical conditions.

The county has services available to the public, specifically to those vulnerable residents who are most at-risk, including the elderly, young children, and the homeless. If you need emergency shelter, call the Your Way Home Call Center at 2-1-1, or text your zip code to 898-211.

Health officials have the following advice for residents to weather the weather:

  • Drink plenty of non-alcoholic, non-caffeinated beverages.
  • Wear lightweight, light-colored, loose-fitting clothing.
  • If at all possible, try to get outdoor work completed in the morning to avoid the warmest part of the day.
  • Keep windows and interior doors open when running a fan at home.
  • Keep cool by seeking an air-conditioned building, such as a mall, library, or senior center if available. If not, seek rest in the shade.
