NORRISTOWN, PA — Montgomery County is on alert as dangerously high temperatures are forecasted to sweep across the region.

A Code Red heat warning is in place from Sunday, Aug. 18 through Tuesday, Aug. 20.

Temperatures are forecasted to hit the mid-90s, with the heat index rising well higher, as heavy humidity will remain in the region following rainstorms. Things should cool down Tuesday night, and temperatures are not expected to get over 90 next Wednesday.

Very young children, the elderly, and those with chronic medical conditions are especially at risk. Officials urge residents to check on their friends and neighbors if they believe they may be at risk.

County officials offer the following tips to residents to help beat the heat:

  • Drink plenty of non-alcoholic, non-caffeinated fluids.
  • Wear lightweight, light-colored, loose-fitting clothing.
  • If at all possible, try to get outdoor work completed during the morning to avoid the warmest part of the
  • day.
  • Keep windows and interior doors open when running a fan at home.
  • Keep cool by seeking an air-conditioned building if available, if not, seek rest in the shade.
  • Most of the Senior Adult Activity Centers (SAACs) are air-conditioned, as are malls and libraries.
