'Critical' Poll Worker Shortage Impacting Montco, Elsewhere

With a concerning shortage of workers nationwide, federal officials have declared Tuesday as "Help America Vote Day" to raise awareness.

NORRISTOWN, PA — Ahead of another pivotal Election Day, local officials are putting out the call to the general public for volunteers to work the polls.

The nation is in the midst of a "critical" poll worker shortage, the U.S. Election Assistance Commission said, and federal officials have established Tuesday as "Help America Vote Day" to raise awarenesss.

"Help America Vote Day will not only celebrate the anniversary of this historic legislation but will also shine a light on the invaluable role election officials and poll workers play in our election process," Election Assistance Commission Chairman Thomas Hicks, Vice Chair Christy McCormick, Commissioner Ben Hovland, and Commissioner Donald Palmer said in a joint statement.

Most poll workers are elderly, and ongoing concerns over COVID-19 have limited the availability of poll workers in many areas.

"Poll workers are an indispensable part of every election," Montgomery County Commissioner Val Arkoosh shared Tuesday. "They work hard to ensure their fellow citizens are able to exercise their right to vote and make their voice heard fairly, securely and efficiently."

Poll workers perform a wide variety of tasks that can shift depending on location, but are generally tasked with preparing polling areas, welcoming voters, verifying registration, and issuing ballots. Workers also explain how to use voting equipment.

Local election officials train and oversee volunteers.

With claims of voter fraud rampant in both 2020 and 2021, and only likely to dial up heading into November, a strong force of poll workers is vital to democracy, officials say.

"Having an adequate number of poll workers to staff polling places on and before Election Day will ensure voters receive the assistance they need at the polls, reduce the potential for long lines or congestion and help provide a positive and smooth voting experience for all voters," the EAC added.
