East Norriton's Mercy Suburban Hospital Acquired In New Deal

EAST NORRITON, PA – Prime Healthcare Foundation has completed its acquisition of Mercy Suburban Hospital in East Norriton, the two sides announced Monday.

The hospital, purchased from Mercy Health System, will retain its not-for-profit status as a member of the Prime Healthcare Foundation, an affiliate of Prime Healthcare Services. As a member of Prime Healthcare Foundation, the 153-bed hospital will no longer be a Catholic hospital and the name of the hospital has changed to Suburban Community Hospital.

The Prime Healthcare Foundation, a 501(c)3 public charity dedicated to improving access to healthcare and increasing educational opportunities in healthcare, has donated millions of dollars to support free community clinics, nonprofit organizations, scholarships and academic programs in healthcare.

With this acquisition, Prime Healthcare committed to invest $40 million in capital improvements at Suburban Community Hospital over the next five years. Prime Healthcare also agreed to adopt a charity care policy that is no less favorable than the current charity care policy in effect. In addition to Suburban Community Hospital, the acquisition includes the related physician practices and ambulatory sites including Suburban Health Center at Plymouth Meeting Mall.

Prime Healthcare named Peter Adamo as CEO of Suburban Community Hospital, effective immediately. Adamo is currently serving as CEO of Roxborough Memorial Hospital, another Prime Healthcare hospital in nearby Philadelphia, and will continue to lead both facilities. Adamo brings extensive leadership experience to his roles, having served as a hospital and regional CEO with several organizations over the past 17 years. Adamo has expertise in operational improvement work and has led several Prime Healthcare hospitals through acquisitions and transitions. “Peter and his team will enhance the hospital’s ability to provide high quality, compassionate health care to the community and we are confident that the hospital will be positioned to serve patients well into the future,” said Prime Healthcare Division II CEO Jim Summersett.

As Mercy Suburban Hospital, the facility has a history of high quality care, including recognition as a Top Performer on Key Quality Measures by The Joint Commission. The hospital is certified as a Primary Stroke Center and has received numerous achievements for heart and stroke care. Suburban Community Hospital will serve patients through its 30-treatment room Emergency Department and its key services include bariatrics, cancer care, and cardiac rehabilitation. The hospital will also have a residency program responsible for educating many of the physicians who practice in Montgomery County.

With the addition of Suburban Community Hospital, Prime Healthcare includes 42 hospitals in 14 states with nearly 42,000 employees and physicians. Eleven of the hospitals are members of the Prime Healthcare Foundation, a 501(c) 3 public charity. Prime Healthcare hospitals are regularly recognized for high quality care and the health system is one of the fastest growing hospital systems in the United States.

Both parties are working collaboratively to obtain final regulatory approvals.
