Elmwood Park Zoo's Barn Owl, 'Dr. Mambo,' Dies At 19

Barn owls only live to be around 4 years old on average in the wild. Dr. Mambo was 19.

NORRISTOWN, PA — Norristown's Elmwood Park Zoo announced on Friday the passing of one of their beloved residents.

Dr. Mambo, a barn owl, died at the age of 19.5 this week.

"Our vet staff had been treating him over the last year for a chronic disease, but he was quickly losing weight despite a good appetite," the zoo said in a statement announcing his passing. "Dr. Mambo was bred in captivity, and has been at the zoo for the last 10 years...We will miss Dr. Mambo very much, as he was a valued member of our zoo family."

Dr. Mambo has been at the zoo outside the barn since July 2008.
