Elmwood Zoo 'Grateful' To Reopen After Devastating Storm
No animals or staff were injured during the storm, which damaged exhibits throughout the zoo and forced an evacuation of many creatures.

NORRISTOWN, PA — Elmwood Zoo was able to swiftly reopen its doors and some previously closed exhibits following the devastating impacts of Tropical Storm Isaias last week.
The storm brought historic levels of flooding to numerous area waterways, and swelled currents from neighboring Stony Creek whipped through the zoo, damaging or destroying numerous exhibits.
Zoo staff had to evacuate 31 animals at the height of the storm, taking them from flood prone areas to higher ground. Staff also worked to rescue valuable materials from flooded buildings and move vehicles to higher ground.

As of Tuesday, giraffe feedings are once again available, and the Thomas Kimmel Playground reopened. Cleanup remains underway, and certain exhibits are closed.
Several members of the community also joined in the cleanup, and the zoo thanked the public for their continued help.
"From volunteers helping to clear debris, to the countless champions who donated to our recovery efforts, to those who kept our morale afloat with stories of favorite visits and general well wishes. Thank you to all of our staff, volunteers, donors, and members who continue to help us grow and look forward to a brighter 2021," the zoo said in a statement.
