Sheriff’s deputies arrested 17 offenders for domestic violence felonies overnight in Montgomery County Tuesday, the sheriff’s office announced.

The arrests were part of the 13th Annual National Family Violence Apprehension Detail, a nationwide sweep of law enforcement agencies working to raise awareness for domestic violence issues.

The program also helps to show offenders that law enforcement will hold them accountable for their crimes, the Sheriff’s Office said.

Of the 17 individuals arrested across the county, the most high profile offender was Jerome Freeman, a Harrisburg man who had been charged with simple assault, abuse, stalking, probation violation, and was ordered to avoid contact with his victim, according to the sheriff’s office.

He was arrested on the street in Norristown Tuesday night.

“Every day, distraught domestic violence victims come to our office to have their protection orders served by our deputies in an effort to stop the abuse,” said Montgomery County Sheriff Russell Bono. “In some cases, our deputies are asked to escort the victims throughout the courthouse, or to their car out of fear of confronting their abusers during court hearings. It’s a reminder of why we continue to serve these victims with compassion, and do anything else we can to support them.”
