Flyers Fire Head Coach Dave Hakstol

Breaking: After months of speculation and a full day of rumors, the Flyers have officially fired head coach Dave Hakstol.

PHILADELPHIA, PA — After months of speculation and a full day of rumors and bizarre denials, the Flyers have officially fired head coach Dave Hakstol, the team confirmed Monday afternoon.

The organization did not release a formal statement until 1:30 p.m Monday, even though Hakstol was reportedly not with the team for practice early Monday and numerous sources, including Broad Street Hockey's Steph Driver, had confirmed the firing as early as Sunday afternoon.

In response to the reports Sunday, a spokesperson for the Flyers said that "Dave Hakstol is our coach," per ESPN, less than 24 hours before the team announced the firing.

No replacement has yet been determined, despite the rumors Sunday that longtime Chicago Blackhawks coach and Stanley Cup champion Joel Quenneville had already been chosen.

Former Lehigh Valley Phantoms and New York Islanders head coach Scott Gordon has been named the interm head coach.

The team had appeared to want to hold on to Hakstol after firing general manager Ron Hextall last month, but new GM Chuck Fletcher ultimately decided to move on as their losing ways continued.

"After meeting this morning with Dave Hakstol and thoughtful consideration, I have decided to relieve him of his duties as head coach," Fletcher said in a statement. "As I continue to assess the team, I feel that this is the best course of action for our group moving forward. I'd like to thank Dave for his service to the team and the organization."

The Flyers have fallen to last place in the Metropolitan Division with a 12-15-4 record.
