Former Montgomery County District Attorney Bruce Castor willtake over the reins as acting Attorney General after Kathleen Kane's resignation, Castor announced in a press conference on Wednesday.

Castor is Kane's top deputy and the next in line to succeed the embattled official. Kane announced her resignation Tuesday after being found guilty of all counts in a perjury trial.

Castor, a Republican, was the Montgomery County DA from 2000 to 2008. He ran for Attorney General in 2004 but lost to Tim Corbett.

Castor recently engaged in heated campaign with Kevin Steele last year to win back his District Attorney's seat. Castor's decision not to prosecute Bill Cosby during his first term was a hallmark of the election cycle and a point of frequent vitriol between Steele and Castor.

When Andrea Constand alleged in 2005 that Cosby sexually assaulted her, Castor did not believe there was sufficient evidence. He told Cosby he would not prosecute him. The more damning evidence in that case, Castor said, came to light long after Castor was out of office.
