Hakim Jones Resigns From Norristown Municipal Council

Norristown is now seeking a replacement for its longtime and well-loved councilman, who is leaving just short of the end of his term.

NORRISTOWN, PA — Norristown municipal councilman Hakim Jones has resigned from his post after years of service, he announced during Tuesday night's meeting. He did not elaborate on exactly why he was resigning, but offered effusive praise for both local government and community in departing.

"Although I have to leave a little early, my service to the Norristown community will never stop," Jones said Tuesday. "God will be sending me on another journey in the near future and I'm ready."

A Norristown native, Jones graduated from Norristown Area High School and then West Virginia University with a Bachelor of Science in Public Relations Journalism. He works for Norristown schools as aruancy abatement specialist, and has been in office since he was first elected in 2015.

"Thank you all for giving me a chance to lead," Jones added. "Thank you for staying in my corner. Thank you amazing residents and community partners. Until next time."

Norristown is now seeking a replacement for Jones' position. His term runs through Dec. 2023. To be qualified, applicants must live in Jones' 4th district and must have held residency in the municipality for at least three years. Reorganization and council officer voting was also held during Tuesday night's meetin. Councilman Thomas Lepera and Councilwoman Heather Lewis were elected to their second consecutive terms as council president and vice president, respectively.
