PENNHURST ASYLUM

After decades of existence as a magnet for teen mischief, Pennhurst Asylum (1205 Commonwealth Drive, Spring City) reopened a few years back as a haunted house.
The results have been impressive. Pennhurst is the only haunted attraction where the walk to the house might be more frightening than the house itself. After navigating dark country roads and parking in a grass field, visitors must walk down a dark and wooded lane to approach the gates of the abandoned asylum. After the "haunted" portion of the tour is complete (featuring a new attraction, 'The Morgue,' in 2018) there is a chance to walk through historical exhibits outlining the past of the property and modern efforts to preserve it.

SCREAM MOUNTAIN
The dark fall, snowless nights of autumn bring succubuses and spirits out to the empty ski slopes of Spring Mountain (757 Spring Mount Road, Spring Mount). There's a haunted hayride and a new, unique twist: a nighttime zipline. The attraction opens Oct. 5. Tickets here.
ELK'S HAUNTED LODGE
This century-old mansion (494 Ford St, Bridgeport) with plenty of haunted history is open every Friday and Saturday night in October. A long-standing classic.
SELMA MANSION
Selma Mansion (1301 W. Airy Street, Norristown) is the subject of year-round paranormal inquiries and investigations. Various fall events include psychic readings, lectures, nighttime "investigations" of the mansion, and haunted tours. An evening of ghost stories is set for Oct. 6, while Selma's House of Horrors event will be on Oct. 13. Details here.
TEMPLE OF TERROR
Tour an old Freemason lodge in Pottstown (20 E. Franklin Street) while the spirits of past inhabitants are called forth. "So scary it's shocking," organizers warn. Tickets (and disturbing website) here.
