Inmate Dies From Burn At SCI Phoenix In Montgomery County

Corrections officials said a "boiling water burn" led to the inmate's death.

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, PA — An inmate has died at SCI Phoenix in Montgomery County from a burn suffered on Sunday, Jan. 14, corrections officials told Patch.

Brandon Grant, 39, was using a "homemade stinger device" to boil water inside his cell when the incident occurred, according to authorities. The burns he received were to his back.

Further circumstances surrounding the incident remain unclear.

Grant was booked at SCI Phoenix in 2021 and was serving a 2 to 5 year sentence after a drug conviction in Philadelphia.

Grant was taken to Lehigh Valley Hospital Cedar Crest for treatment where he died at 6:56 p.m. Sunday night.

Pennsylvania State Police were notified and are investigating.

An autopsy was completed by the Lehigh County Coroner's Office, which described his cause of death as pulmonary thromboemboli caused by water burns.
