Nueva Vida Norristown New Life Mennonite Church is celebrating 100 years of Mennonite mission in Norristown on Saturday, November 17. The celebration begins at 5:30 p.m. with site visits to the houses of worship formerly used by the congregations. The worship celebration begins at 6:30 p.m.
The congregation, which has served the Norristown community since 1990, is the latest expression of the legacy started by Franconia Mennonite Conference in the winter of 1907–08. The Norristown Mission was the conference’s first mission point. Young adults led the way in building the ministry and engaging with peoples of various ethnic backgrounds. From this effort, the First Mennonite congregation was formed, meeting at the corner of Cherry and West Marshall Streets. In 1959, a sister congregation, Bethel Mennonite, was started and met on Thomas Street. Fuente de Salvación, a congregation that shared First Mennonite’s building, gained membership in Franconia Conference in 1986. The three congregations cooperated in outreach ministries with the community.
In 1990, the three congregations were led by God to form one intercultural congregation. The former Bethany United Methodist Church, at the corner of Swede and East Marshall Streets, was chosen as the home base. Today, Nueva Vida Norristown New Life is known for bilingual (Spanish and English) worship, biblical teaching, and ministries such as a photo ID clinic, Precious Life Child Care Center, New Life Internet Café, pastoral training in Cuba, Peace Circles, and other ministries.
