Methacton Cancels Monday Classes Due To Strike

ICYMI: Classes were canceled on Monday at Methacton due to the teachers strike.

EAGLEVILLE, PA — Classes were canceled on Monday at Methacton due to the teachers strike, the school district confirmed late Sunday night.

Talks between the teachers union and the school district continued into the evening on Sunday as extensive attempts were made to resolve the contract dispute that has been ongoing since January.

The district said that talks continued until around 8:30 p.m. At about 9 p.m., the district announced that classes would be canceled Monday.

The Methacton Education Association, representing the teachers, is aiming to renegotiate a contract that provides higher wages.

Methacton school board president Chris Boardman described negotiations as "productive" on Sunday night after nearly seven hours of talks.

"In fairness to parents, however, we did want to get the announcement about schools being closed out within the timetable we had promised them,” Boardman said on Sunday.

The district added that a state mediator has remained on site to attempt o ameliorate differences between the two parties.

Any official notice on further school closures will be given by 8 p.m. on Monday, at the latest. The maximum duration of any strike in Pennsylvania, as determined by the Department of Education, is 15 school days.
