Montco Awards Rare 'Medal Of Valor' To 4 Cops For First Time Since 2012
Officers placed their lives at risk in a series of extraordinary actions during two separate recent incidents in Montgomery County.
NORRISTOWN, PA — Four police officers from Montgomery County were honored with a rare commendation for extraordinary service, the Medal of Valor, which has not been bestowed to any officer since 2012.
The medal is given to officers who "bravely placed their lives at risk to protect the citizens of Montgomery County." The ceremony awarded officers for two separate incidents, one in Whitemarsh and another in Upper Providence.
“Montgomery County has some of the finest law enforcement officers anywhere, and I’m honored to be able to showcase their exceptional work, incredible bravery and dedication to protecting and serving Montgomery County, as well as recognize the actions of our amazing residents, who are always willing to step up to help law enforcement do their job,” District Attorney Kevin Steele said in a statement.

Whitemarsh's Corporal Matthew Stadulis was honored for disarming a man who fired a stolen gun at him, Steele said. The man's gun did not fire, and Stadulis radioed for backup and took the man into custody.
Limerick Sgt. Stephen Winneberger, as well as Upper Providence Officers Michael Sheehan and Officer John Burdsall, were honored for their handling of a standoff at a local apartment complex. The suspect opened fire on the officers as they arrived, narrowly missing, Steele said. As officers took cover, they fired a non-fatal shot to his shoulder, and took him into custody.
