Montco GOP Leader 'Swatted' After Supporting Kamala Harris

Police swarmed the local GOP leader's home after midnight following his recent appearance on CNN.

UPPER MERION, PA — A Montgomery County Republican official said that he was "swatted" due to his recent public support for Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris.

Matt McCaffery, and Upper Merion resident and member of the Montgomery County Republican Committee, wrote an op-ed for the Philadelphia Inquirer in July before appearing on CNN recently.

"I voted for Trump in 2016," the long headline to the op-ed read. "His disrespect for veterans will make me vote for a Democrat."

McCaffery's CNN appearance was on Friday. Hours later, on Friday night, someone called Upper Merion police and fabricated some kind of false emergency. The details are not clear, but the fake threat was serious enough that numerous armed officers swarmed McCaffery's home after midnight, detained him, and searched the property.

He released home surveillance footage of the incident on Twitter.

"Last night, my family was swatted in what Upper Merion Police are classifying as a politically motivated crime," he wrote. "This happened after I appeared on CNN, where I discussed my decision not to support Donald Trump. I want to be clear: these types of attacks are exactly why I’m speaking out against the MAGA wing of my party and why I’m proudly voting for Kamala Harris."

Once authorities realized it was a swatting incident, they released McCaffery. No arrests have yet been made, and the investigation remains ongoing.

McCaffery's social media profiles were filled with angry and sometimes threatening messages following his TV appearance.

WHYY reports that the Montgomery County Republican Committee is weighing disciplinary action against McCaffery, as his public support of the opposition party breaks their bylaws.

McCaffery, meanwhile, has indicated that he will continue his public support of the Democratic ticket.
