Montco HS Student Creates Jewelery In Honor Of Pittsburgh Victims

The funds will support Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society, a humanitarian organization that was targeted by the Pittsburgh synaogue shooter.

EAGLEVILLE, PA — Gracie Silverstein needed to do something.

The Methacton High School senior was devasated by the mass shooting Saturday at a Pittsburgh synaoguge that left 11 dead and injured nine more.

"This tragedy hit far too close to home," she wrote in the aftermath of the shooting. "As I am not of voting age, I felt stuck in a way that I didn’t know what I could do to make a difference. "

She found a way. Silverstein partnered with a local Etsy shop to create unique necklaces in honor of the victims that read "stronger than hate" in Hebrew, she shared in an Instagram post this week.

Part of the money raised from each necklace will go to the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society (HIAS), a Maryland-based humanitarian organization that works with the U.S. State Department to provide assistance to refugees across the country.

HIAS was one of the groups targeted by the Pittsburgh shooting suspect, Robert Bowers. According to the New York Times, Bowers posted an anti-Semitic rant aimed at HIAS online shortly before the shooting Saturday. Their Pennsylvania headquarters are on 21st and Arch in Philadelphia.

"We must come together and end gun violence," Silverstein said. "Why not start by wearing a change agent around our neck? Spread love, not hate. We are stronger together."

As of Wednesday morning, more than 400 necklaces had been ordered.

Necklaces are $36 dollars. Instructions for ordering are included in Silverstein's Instagram post, which is below.
