Montco SAAC Joins 16th Annual March for Meals Celebration

SUPPORT WILL HELP TO FIGHT SENIOR HUNGER AND ISOLATION IN MONTCO

Norristown, PA (3/19/18) – Montgomery County Senior Adult Activities Center is participating in the 16th annual March for Meals – a month-long, community-by-community celebration of Meals on Wheels and the vulnerable seniors who rely on the vital service to remain independent at home. Montco SAAC’s celebration includes Community Champions Week, running from March 19th through the 23rd. In an effort to raise awareness about senior hunger, Montco SAAC’s Meals on Wheels program is welcoming individuals and organizations that have had a positive impact on the local community to help deliver meals to the 350 homebound seniors that are served across Montgomery County. This year’s lineup includes Norristown Area High School Principal, Ed Roth, volunteers from the Women’s Center of Montgomery County, staff from ACLAMO, (the Latin American Community Action of Montgomery County), the Norristown Police Department, and therapists from The Lincoln Center for Family & Youth.

Montco SAAC opened its doors in the 1950s as a welcoming place for seniors in Norristown to receive a warm, nutritious lunch. Since then, the nonprofit has expanded to include two senior centers offering educational programming, social services, and nutritionally balanced lunches, three Meals on Wheels programs that serve the homebound seniors of Norristown, Ambler, and Eastern Montco, and an inter-generational art center in Ambler.

The annual March for Meals commemorates the historic day in March 1972 when President Nixon signed into law a measure that amended the Older Americans Act of 1965 and established a national nutrition program for seniors 60 years and older. Since 2002, Meals on Wheels programs from across the country have joined forces for the annual awareness campaign to celebrate this successful public-private partnership and garner the support needed to fill the gap between the seniors served and those still in need.

“This March, hundreds of local Meals on Wheels programs will rally their communities to build the support that will enable them to deliver nutritious meals, friendly visits and safety checks to America's most at-risk seniors all year long,” said Ellie Hollander, President and CEO of Meals on Wheels America. “With the demand for Meals on Wheels increasing along with our country’s senior population, we need to ensure that seniors are not forgotten.”
