NORRISTOWN, PA — Great news for parents employed by Montgomery County: the county has implemented a new policy offering paid parental leave.

The policy goes into effect on Feb. 1 for all full time employees, both fathers and mothers.

“We recognize the importance of assisting our employees who become new parents to achieve a work-life balance," said Valerie Arkoosh, chair of the Montgomery County Commissioners. "By doing so, we help ourselves by providing a benefit that has been shown to help employees, families and communities and will lead to increased morale and decreased turnover."

Officials said that Montgomery County was among southeastern Pennsylvania's suburban counties to adopt a policy offering parents paid leave.

The six weeks can be taken as a single block of time or broken up and used on an intermittent basis within that first year.

New parents are also offered another six weeks of leave that can be either unpaid or taken from vacation time.
