Montgomery Co. Underage Drinking Steadily Declines: State
The county is not alone among highly populated areas in Pennsylvania where underage residents are drinking less.
MONTGOMERY COUNTY, PA — Underage drinking offenses have continued to show an overall, steady decline in Montgomery County as in other highly populated areas of the state, according to statistics from the last several years released by the state.
Montgomery County had 402 underage drinking offenses in 2019. That number dropped to 295 in 2020 and 235 in 2021, and has remained comparatively low at 244 in 2022 and 245 in 2023, the new data from the Administrative Office of Pennsylvania Courts (AOPC) shows.
Over the past four years, despite just under 7 percent of Pennsylvania's population living in the county, it accounts for just 4.21 percent of the state's underage drinking offenses.

As the third largest county, Montgomery also has a lesser chunk of underage offenses than its smaller neighbors in Chester (7.34 percent) and Delaware (4.22 percent) counties.
However, the trend in both of those counties, as well as Bucks and Philadelphia, has been one of decline roughly on par with the same decline seen in Montgomery County.

The statistics shed light on a different angle of generational changes and underage drinking as a whole, as numerous studies suggest that Gen Z, which covers most individuals coming of age now, drinks far less than previous generations.
Experts point to numerous explanations, ranging from growing awareness of health concerns, general focus on health and sobriety, and the rise of marijuana as an alternative, according to a recent analysis in Time.
