She’s the most interesting dog in the world.
There’s no doubt about it: K9 Turks is one of the coolest creatures - dog or human - around town.
Former DA Risa Vetri Ferman launched the Courthouse Comfort Dog Program at the Montgomery County Courthouse in October of 2014.
Ever since then, Turks has been a mainstay in Norristown, helping victims and witnesses of crimes through traumatic courthouse situations.
And according to Canine Partners for Life, the organization which trained Turks, her good work has continued over the past year since she first came on the scene.
"Turks, a yellow Labrador, has all of the qualities necessary to be an excellent companion in the courthouse," the organization writes. "She can be sensitive to a person’s feelings, yet is confident enough to not react to an individual’s emotional distress. She has the ability to remain calm, and create a sense of comfort and security. She is a social dog but can easily transition from one person to the next."
Turks starts most days by greeting whoever happens to be in the courthouse, CPL says: jurors, other employees, guards. Turks is most busy on Tuesdays and Thursdays comforting children. She is present soon after crimes occur and meets with victims in the immediate aftermath of horrific events, bringing comfort to those who need it most. Specifically, she has done amazing work with children who have been victims of sexual abuse, CPL says.
In one instance, Turks placed her paw on the shoulder of an 8-year-old girl who was preparing to testify against her grandfather for sexual abuse. The gesture brought tears to the entire family in an incredibly trying time, eyewitnesses said.
