UPPER MERION TOWNSHIP, PA — A former school building left vacant in Upper Merion will soon be transformed into an affordable housing development.

Groundbreaking was held recently on the Town Center Residential project, on the campus of the Valley Forge Presbyterian Church campus, which will bring 20 new affordable apartments to the area.

"This is all happening because Valley Forge Presbyterian Church saw a need in the community and decided to do something about it," Commissioner Jamila Winder said. "Together with state, local, and community partners, this project is well underway."

Officials said that the project was realized due to the investment from multiple levels of government, including a $1.4 million loan from the county.

The Pennsylvania Housing Finance Agency, Upper Merion Township, Valley Forge Presbyterian Church, Upper Merion Area Housing Association, Stone Sherick Consulting Group, and Regional Housing Legal Services all assisted as well.

The county is touting the project as an example of their new "housing blueprint," a program aimed at ensuring all county residents are sheltered.

"Montco's first ever Housing Blueprint lays the foundation for how we keep this kind of momentum going," Winder added.

An exact completion date for the Upper Merion project is not yet clear.

Valley Forge Presbyterian Church is located on 191 Town Center Road.
