New Bill Would Make It Easier To Buy Liquor In PA
The proposed legislation would allow beer distributors and grocery stores to acquire permits to sell liquor.
Legislation was introduced into the Pennsylvania legislature recently that would make it easier for residents to purchase liquor.
Senate Bill 548, introduced by State Sen. Gene Yaw (R-23), would make it legal for non-state stores like liquor stores and beer detailers to obtain licenses to sell spirits.
The Distilled Spirits Council, a national trade association backing the liquor market, touted the potential economic boon of the move.

The group said that adding 900 spirits outlets in the state would bring in $100 million in revenue.
"I am pleased that a number of my colleagues on the Senate Law and Justice Committee have also signed onto this legislation," Yaw said. "Serving the consumer and providing greater convenience should be the mission of the PLCB (Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board) and I believe this legislation achieves that."

It's sorely needed, according to the Council.
Pennsylvania is currently "extremely underserved," as compared to other states, with a current rate of 0.67 spirits outlets per 10,000 residents. The national average is 3.80 per 10,000.
Yaw's legislation would also increase the number of existing wine and spirits state outlets.
It remains to be seen what kind of support the bill has in the senate.
