New Montco Scam Soliticing Exorbitant Fees From Homeowners
New homeowners particularly are targeted by the scam, officials said.
NORRISTOWN, PA — Montgomery County officials are warning residents that a scam targeting local homebuyers is circulating the region.
Some residents are receiving a letter from companies like "Property Site," which claims to be based in California. The letter offers homeowners a copy of their "property assessment profile" or a "complimentary grant deed" in exchange for a hefty service fee, sometimes up to $110.
Real property records can be obtained from the county government for a much smaller fee.

“Don’t be misled by these real-seeming solicitations,” Montgomery County Recorder of Deeds Jeanne Sorg said in a statement. “This company, and others like it, target unsuspecting homeowners, especially recent home buyers and the elderly.”
Officials said numerous other companies in addition to Property Site were sending out similar solicitations. While homeowners across the county have received letters, officials believe the scams are particularly targeting those who recently purchased their home.

Certified copies of records can be searched using the county's Recorder of Deeds Public Access System and can be purchased for $10.50.
Sorg urged residents to also register for FraudSleuth, a program which notifies homeowners when a document is recorded with their name or parcel number on it.
