NORRISTOWN, PA — Norristown Department of Buildings and Code Enforcement has been nationally recognized, becoming the first program in the state to ever receive such a designation.
It's also only the second in the country to ever receive the recognition, to go along with the city of Plano, Texas.
To receive the accreditation, given by the American Association of Code Enforcement, a municipality must meet 59 rigorous standards.

"The Accreditation Standards were developed by AACE to ensure agencies responsible for enforcement of codes, ordinances, regulations, and laws relating to public health, safety, and welfare met national standards," Kelvin Beene, President of the American Association of Code Enforcement, said in a statement. "These standards are intended to ensure a uniform level of service and level of professnalism with all accredited code agencies, thereby increasing community’s confidence in the policies and practices of an agency and the overall code enforcement profession."
Standards review how a department operates, its policies and procedures, punitive actions, inspection activity, hearings and appeals, personnel, and more.
