Norristown Fire Dept. Performs 'Smoke Detector Blitz' On MLK Day
The sweeping, annual initiative has a huge impact on community safety, officials say.
NORRISTOWN, PA -- The Norristown Fire Department was joined by volunteers from around the community on Martin Luther King Jr. Day to deliver smoke detectors to households in need.
Working alongside students from Norristown Area School District and volunteers from IBEW 98, the fire department's annual blitz checked and installed detectors around the municipality.
According to the municipal Buildings and Code Compliance department, close to 11,000 smoke detector violations (missing, no battery, expired, etc.) were recorded in residences from 2016 – 2021. The Norristown Fire Department runs fire safety awareness programs throughout the year to reinforce the safety message.
