Norristown Launching 'Heavy Duty' Cleanups To Beautify Borough

"Keeping Norristown clean and eliminating the negative perceptions of our community is one of our top priorities."

NORRISTOWN, PA — Norristown has announced a series of coordinated "heavy duty" cleanups around town as part of a larger effort to improve the borough. The goals of the program are threefold: conservation, education, and beautification.

A press conference held early Thursday morning at Poley Park served as a formal kicking off point for the effort.

"We will continue to proactively tackle litter, dumping, and other environmental issues in Norristown," Council President Sonya Sanders said in a statement. "Keeping Norristown clean and eliminating the negative perceptions of our community is one of our top priorities."

The cleanups will focus on illegal dumpsites around the town, including the area behind Poley Park on Marshall Street, below the Dannehower/Markley Street Bridge on East Washington Street, and a few other areas around town.

The municipality is working with professional clean-up crews from Servpro Restoration Services on the job.

Officials recognized that some of these areas are occupied by homeless individuals, and said that they will be working local agencies to find a way to assist them. Moving forward, new "no trespassing" signs, as well as increased monitoring, will be implemented to keep the areas clean.

Norristown is currently the only Montgomery County affiliate of the Keep America Beautiful initiative.
