The heroic pair risked their lives to save a drowning man and his young daughter in the Schuylkill River.
NORRISTOWN, PA — A pair of Norristown police officers have received special commendation from the Montgomery County District Attorney's Office for their heroic actions in rescuing a father and his daughter from the Schuylkill River.
Officers Edward Butterworth Sr. and Matthew Walsh were among dozens recognized by leaders around the county for their outstanding bravery over the past year.
“Montgomery County has some of the finest law enforcement officers anywhere, and I’m honored to be able to showcase their incredible bravery, exceptional work and dedication to protecting and serving Montgomery County residents, as well as recognize the actions of citizens who stepped up to help law enforcement do their job and help victims,” DA Kevin Steele said in a statement.

The incident occurred back on Labor Day last year, Sept. 4, at Riverfront Park on 2 Haws Avenue.
Police on patrol saw a pick-up truck atop a boat ramp crash into the water and float out some 60 feet into the water, in the middle of the river. A young girl was in the bed of the truck, and she told police she could not swim.

That's when Officer Edward Butterworth, Sr., described by police as an avid swimmer, leapt into action.

He swam out into the river as the truck began to sink and float away in the current. He was able to navigate the waters, reach both the father and the child, and guide them back to shore.
The girl and her father were taken to a nearby hospital for observation, but were not injured.
"Montgomery County wouldn’t be the safe and wonderful place it is without this teamwork," Steele added.
Butterworth and Walsh were presented with their commendations during a special ceremony Tuesday.
