Norristown Proposes Slight Budget Increase For 2023
Some operating costs are up due to inflation, the municipality says, but they're getting some federal help.
NORRISTOWN, PA — As Norristown continues to recover from the effects of the pandemic and historic inflation rates make themselves felt in the area and across the country, the municipality has proposed a 7 percent increase in the operating budget for 2023. They expect federal assistance to help close the gap and minimize the need for increased local spending.
Muncipal Council made public a glance at the proposal for next year during an October 18 meeting. The current proposal of $40.5 million marks about a $3 million increase over 2022's $37.8 million budget.
"Some operating costs are up due to inflation," the municipality said during a recent presentation, noting prices for things like gas and vehicle maintenance.

They're also facing staffing shortages in various public safety positions, requiring overtime payments.
As things stand, Norristown has a $1.8 million revenue gap. A "large part" of the municipality's $1.2 million in American Rescue Plan Act funding will be used to help close the gap.
