'Sneaky Ice', Freezing Rain In Philly Area Prompts Warning

"One of winter's most dangerous types of weather": freezing rain could lead to accumulating ice on the roads that is difficult to see.

PHILADELPHIA, PA — A treacherous mix of freezing rain and icy roads is expected to impact roads throughout the greater Philadelphia area through the early afternoon, with officials warning of extremely slippery conditions for both drivers and pedestrians.

A light glaze of ice as well as freezing rain has prompted the National Weather Service to issue a winter weather advisory for parts of the region. Drizzle will occur throughout the morning, and rain is likely from around 2 p.m. until the early morning hours Tuesday.

“Very slippery sidewalks, roads, and bridges are possible,” the National Weather Service said Monday. “The hazardous conditions could impact the morning commute.”

The Service called it "one of winter's most dangerous types of weather" as the the fine layer of ice that accumulates during this type of freezing rain is very difficult to see on the roads.

For motorists, officials recommend slowing down, avoiding the use of cruise control, and leaving extra distance between you and other vehicles.
