Timeline For Weekend Thunderstorms, Dense Fog In Philly Area

Thunderstorms, scattered rain showers and heavy fog are in the forecast for the Philly area this weekend. Here's the latest.

EASTERN PA — Scattered rain showers are in the forecast for eastern Pennsylvania on Friday, with dense fog and thunderstorms expected to linger through the weekend.

Commuters in the Keystone State are in store for hefty morning fog, which is expected to clear by late morning or early afternoon, though low clouds will persist for much of the day, the National Weather Service said. A dense fog advisory has been issued until 8 a.m. for all marine areas and the immediate coastal areas hugging the Jersey Shore and Delaware River.

“Use caution if you're driving near the coast this morning. The fog is quite dense! Slow down and use low beam headlights if you encounter low visibility,” the agency said in a tweet on Friday.

Visibility will be one quarter mile or less in dense fog, paving the way for hazardous driving conditions due to low visibility.

“If driving, slow down, use your headlights and leave plenty of distance ahead of you,” the agency said.

Temperatures are generally expected to stay in the 60s and low 70s. “Overall, just a cloudy, damp, dreary day,” the National Weather Service said.

Here’s what’s expected to happen:

  • Expect light scattered showers throughout the day spreading westward. Rainfall accumulation will be minimal, with “around a few hundreds of an inch of rain,” according to the National Weather Service.
  • “The main concern [Friday] will be the fog, mainly along the coast,” the National Weather Service said in a forecast discussion. Visibility will be one quarter mile or less in affected areas. Fog is expected to continue into Saturday morning.
  • Saturday should see mostly cloudy and humid weather in the 70s, with scattered showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon and evening.
  • Sunday will continue the humid trend with muggy and warm weather in the upper 70s to 80 degrees, with mostly cloudy skies and scattered thunderstorms in the afternoon and evening.
