Phillies Rhys Hoskins Tears ACL, Likely Out For Season

It's brutal news for the defending NL champion Phillies, as they lose their longtime first baseman just a week before Opening Day.

CLEARWATER, FL — Longtime face of the Phillies franchise and starting first baseman Rhys Hoskins tore his ACL while fielding a ground ball during a spring training game, the team announced Thursday night, likely ending his season.

The Phillies did not provide a timeline for Hoskins to return to action, but injuries of this nature typically take the better of a year to recover from.

“The recommended surgery is an ACL reconstruction,” the team said a statement. “Additional details regarding the surgery, including the date and surgeon, are to be determined.”

The emergence of Hoskins in 2017 marked the true beginning of the Phillies rebuild. Along with Aaron Nola, he’s one of the two longest tenured players on the team. Because 2023 marks his final year of team control, he could reach free agency next winter, meaning that it’s possible he’s played his last game as a Phillie.

In Hoskins’ absence, the Phillies will likely turn to Darick Hall, a rookie in 2022 who has been tearing up the Grapefruit League, to man first base. Hall was the presumed designated hitter during Bryce Harper’s absence, so the club will have a new slot to fill in the starting lineup regardless.

One of the group of utility men including Edmundo Sosa, Scott Kingery, and Josh Harrison appears likely to replace some combination of Alec Bohm, Kyle Schwarber, and Nick Castellanos in the field, while one of those sluggers fills the DH slot.
