Today is World Nutella Day
The whole world will celebrate the creamy chocolate, nutty treat born of war-time rationing
World Nutella Day. Wow, never thought I would hear those words together in a sentence.
According to the product’s website, it all started in Italy. During World War II, money was tight for many. Italian pastry chef Pietro Ferrero was no different.
“At the time, there was very little chocolate because cocoa was in short supply due to World War II rationing,” said the site. “Ferrero used hazelnuts, which are plentiful in the Piedmont region of Italy (northwest), to extend the chocolate supply.”

Until 1964, Nutella was named “Supercrema Gianduja.” That’s a mouth-full! In 1983, Ferrero started exporting Nutella to the northeastern United States and breakfast was a whole new ballgame.
Made from roasted hazelnuts, skim milk (that’s right allergy folks) and a “hint of cocoa,” the creamy treat can be used in a lot of ways. It contains no artificial colors or preservatives.

On Feb. 5, the world will celebrate this creation with World Nutella Day. Find a way to join in yourself. I think I might go out and get some!
If you are really into the product, save your proofs of purchase to get free stuff from the company. You can win a case of Nutella by answering five questions in the site’s current sweepstakes.
Several local stores carry Nutella, including and in Norristown.
