Tropical Storm Isaias Caused $800,000 In Damage To Elmwood Zoo
Fortunately, the widespread damage is being covered by insurance, officials said this week, with some funds already disbursed.

NORRISTOWN, PA — When Tropical Storm Isaias ripped through southeastern Pennsylvania in early August, it left a trail of damage throughout the region, ripping off rooftops and even leading to fatalities.
One of the hardest hit local establishments was Elmwood Park Zoo, which saw unprecedented flooding and wind damage.
Officials estimate that the storm caused about $800,000 in damage, Norristown municipal officials said on Thursday. That comes after a meticulous recording of the zoo property in the wake of the storm.

The claims process was slowed, according to Norristown authorities, by the sheer volume of claims filed during that time period as a result of the storm.

However, all $800,000 is being covered by insurance. Damage cause to Norristown municipal property is also being covered, and funds have already begun to come in.
A total of 31 animals were displaced during the tempest, which also crushed several exhibits. As the Schuylkill River raged to historic heights, zoo staff had to move quickly to bring animals to safe high ground.
Animals moved included an alligator, otters, porcupines, maras, birds, and others. Employees also had to move vehicles out of the storm path as it intensified, and save important items from zoo offices.
