Vigilance On Human Trafficking Needed, Montgomery Co. Leaders Say

"Human trafficking is a very secretive crime that preys on some of the most vulnerable among us," officials said.

NORRISTOWN, PA — Authorities in Montgomery County are speaking out this week on the dangers posed by human trafficking.

It comes following the recent National Human Trafficking Day, which was designated by the Department of Homeland Security on Jan. 111.

"Human trafficking is a very secretive crime that preys on some of the most vulnerable among us," county commissioner Tom DiBello said. "It’s hard to detect yet it is widespread in the US and around the globe."

The Pennsylvania Office of Victim Services offers the following tips on the most vulnerable communities:

  • Have an unstable living situation
  • Have previously experienced other forms of violence such as sexual abuse or domestic violence
  • Have run away or are involved in the juvenile justice or child welfare system
  • Are undocumented immigrants
  • Are facing poverty or economic need
  • Have a caregiver or family member who has a substance use issue
  • Are addicted to drugs or alcohol

"It comes in several different forms, including sex trafficking, forced labor, and domestic servitude," DiBello added. "And, for many reasons, victims are often afraid to come forward. This day of awareness may come once a year, but it is something we can all be vigilant about."
