White Ex-Norristown Police Officer Files Suit Alleging Racism: Report

He claims the Norristown municipal council would only hire an African-American chief.

An ex-Norristown police officer that is white has filed a suit alleging racism against him because the municipal council passed him over for the police chief job because he wasn’t an African-American, according to the Times Herald.

Mark Shannon, 54, of Bridgeport, was a lieutenant and had served on the force for 28 years before retiring in December, the report states.

He is seeking at least $150,000 in damages due to the council’s allegedly biased process, according to the report.

Shannon described a “discriminatory” hiring process by the council when former chief and current Montgomery County Sheriff Russell Bono vacated the position, the report states.
