Proposed PA Senior Citizens Property Tax Freeze

The Pennsylvania General Assembly has a bill in the works that would freeze the amount of property tax on real estate owned by senior citizens that is their primary home.

The bill, Senate Bill 197, titled the Senior Citizens Property Tax Freeze Act, was sent to the Senate Finance Committee in January, 2013.  The primary sponsor is Robert M. Tomlinson, Republican, serving Bucks County.  The cosponsors of the bill are McIlhinney, Greenleaf, Mensch, Erickson, Browne, Waugh, Costa, Rafferty, Argall, Vulakovich, Tartaglione, Williams, Washington, Brewster, Schwank, Kasunic, Stack, Fontana, Solobay, Ward, White, Hutchinson, Baker and Boscola.

If passed as written, the legislation would freeze property taxes at the amount that was in effect on January 1, 2011 if the property was owned as the primary home of a person age 65 or older.  Once a home owner turns 65, the property tax would be frozen at the then-prevailing amount.  If this bill passes into law, a homeowner would have to request the tax freeze.
