April is Child Abuse Prevention Month
In 2012, the Pennsylvania General Assembly created the Task Force on Child Protection to examine existing laws. At numerous public meetings, the Task Force heard from victims and experts and their experience with Pennsylvania law. The Task Force then produced a report including specific recommendations to allow our laws to better protect children.
I am proud to report that Pennsylvania is making sweeping reforms to improve the well-being of children throughout the state. Many reforms based on the Task Force’s recommendations were signed into law in December 2013 and other measures are being considered in the General Assembly.
Our children are a precious asset. We must do all we can to keep them safe and prepare them to be the future leaders of the state.
As parents, friends and neighbors, I ask you to stand with me this month – and every day – to ensure the safety of all our children.
If you suspect child abuse, I strongly encourage you to call 1-800-932-0313 and report it to the Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare. A trained specialist will interview the caller to determine the most appropriate course of action.
